Costa Rica Los Madrigal Micromill

Coffee processing at Costa Rica Los Madrigal Micromill

Los Madrigal Micromill is managed by Diego Ureña in the Tarrazu region of Costa Rica. There are three farms delivering cherry to this Micromill encompassing a total of 25 hectares. This particular lot comes from El Alto Vara Blanca.
The farms were inherited by Diego and his brother Armando from their grandfather when they were only 11 and 13 years old, so they grew up knowing coffee farming was likely in their future.
Microlots from Costa Rica are typically sourced from producers who have invested not only in growing their farms, but also in building and operating their own processing facilities. Micromills often yield fewer than 1,000 bags annually, and are usually independently owned by a family or small group of producers.
This Micromill features expansive raised African beds for drying.
Diego and his brother are extremely passionate about reforestation and environmentally sustainable practices on the farm. Diego has plans to continue to renew the existing coffee trees and also plant new varieties as the opportunity arises.
